Simon Whitmore (MacKillop Leavers 2001)
1. What has been your journey since graduating from MacKillop?
After graduating from MacKillop, I went on to Guilford Young College Hobart Campus and finished Year 12. From there I entered the workforce, gaining an office job in Superannuation. After 11 years in that area, I changed it up and started working in the IT sector where I have remained since. I now work at the Department of Justice in an IT role.
2. Have you always wanted to pursue a career in this field? If yes, when and how did you realise this?
Originally, I did want to join the IT sector, however needed a job out of school and ended up staying in the Superannuation industry for 11 years. When approached by a friend who had a local IT business, I took the leap.
3. What advice would you give to current students, preparing to graduate and looking to the future?
I left Year 12 not knowing exactly what I wanted to do but ended up in a workplace and industry that I enjoy. I think keeping an open mind about being willing to change direction should the first choice not pan out is a really great way to think about it.
4. Do you have a favourite memory at MCK?
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at MacKillop. We had a great group in my year level. My favourite memories were probably the successful school basketball tournaments.
5. What has been your involvement with the MacKillop Beltas?
I’ve held many roles including President, Secretary, captain, committee member, manning the canteen. Bit of everything in the past 20 years.
6. How have you found your experience at MacKillop to be as an alumni turned parent of a current student?
The grounds and buildings have certainly changed a lot. The facilities available to the students have much improved and the use of technology and online learning makes me feel quite old!
