Learning Programs

At MacKillop Catholic College it is our aim to nurture a culture of vibrant learning environment that reflects the Josephite and Edmund Rice visions. In accordance with the charism of Edmund Rice we aim to provide a liberating education based on a Gospel Spirituality, within an inclusive community committed to Justice and Solidarity. Reflecting on our Josephite heritage, we aspire to immerse ourselves in the midst of life to empower others and bring hope to our students.

We focus on a safe, transformative learning environment that opens hearts and minds, through rigorous teaching and invigorating learning experiences, so that through critical reflection and engagement, each person is hope-filled, compassionate and compelled to serve the world for the betterment of all.

Learning and Teaching Framework

MacKillop Catholic College provides a learning and teaching framework for the subjects in the Junior School (Year 7 – 9) and the Senior School (Year 10 – 12).

ENABLE EXCELLENCE through high expectations and equity in all that we do. Teachers at MacKillop Catholic College intentionally implement strategies and practices that enable learners to flourish. As architects of the learning environment, teachers work towards finding the strengths of each individual to design learning experiences specifically targeting individual student’s needs.

ENGAGE LEARNERS who are aspirational and have a lifelong love of learning. Teachers at MacKillop Catholic College recognise and value learning as being at the heart of what we do and who we are as a community. Our team of dedicated, caring professional staff commit to providing an engaging, relevant and diverse curriculum as well as enabling opportunities beyond the curriculum to extend and empower students.

MAKE CONNECTIONS through embracing the traditions of our faith and dual charisms, we strive to foster a holistic approach to education which actively engages with both the world of the students and life beyond the college gates. Teachers at MacKillop Catholic College understand that learning must be responsive to the needs of, and connect strongly with diverse communities and practice beyond the classroom and into the future. In order for students to achieve their very best academically, personally and socially, teachers cultivate learning environments which work towards unleashing student potential in the pursuit of learning and growing for the future. Graduates of MacKillop Catholic College leave our community with a rich understanding of, and a passion to commit to the world they are entering into.

BUILD RELATIONSHIPS that are life-giving, collaborative and respectful. Teachers at MacKillop Catholic College celebrate the achievements of their students, giving recognition to all members of the community in order to promote self-efficacy, resilience and the pursuit of excellence. We are committed to achieving strong relationships between teachers and learners whereby students feel known as both a person and a learner. Mackillop Catholic College aims to establish a rigorous community of shared practice which is centred on collaboration, moderation, mentoring and feedback.

Learning Extension

MacKillop Catholic College coordinates the provision of developmentally appropriate and engaging programs for high-potential, high-achieving, or gifted students. This is achieved through various strategies at a whole school, class and extracurricular program level. All teachers develop, design and implement differentiated learning programs with deliberate adjustments to content, process, product and learning environment to meet the specific learning needs of high-potential and gifted students.

MacKillop Catholic College constantly looks for opportunities to provide extensions beyond the classroom curriculum in the individual student’s areas of passion, giftedness and talent.

The College also has a dedicated program, the Kaleidoscope Program, by way of invitation to identified High Ability students.  This group meets after school using an inquiry-based program each semester.

Learning Enhancement

Learning Enhancement aims to ensure student ability is promoted with inclusive practices.

MacKillop Catholic College celebrates neurodiversity and caters to a wide range of learning abilities and needs. Learning Enhancement staff work collaboratively with teachers and parents to provide an integrated support network for students with individual needs. It is recognised that every student learns differently and some may require a more flexible approach to their learning.

The Learning Enhancement team acts in a consultative and collaborative capacity in addressing the learning needs of all students. Targeted intervention programs are implemented where the learning needs of a student have been identified as requiring attention. Upon enrolment, the educational needs of individual students are identified and, where appropriate, extension and support processes for progressing learning are implemented. The multidisciplinary team collaboratively gains a thorough understanding of the young person’s educational needs and designs a plan on how they can be achieved within the inclusive curriculum model offered at the college.  Assistance can be provided to students in a range of areas including organisational and time management skills, study and research skills and exam preparation. Targeted programs designed to improve students’ skills in numeracy, literacy, reading comprehension and organisation are offered.

The College has a dedicated space called the HUB to provide a learning environment that supports individual student needs as needed.
