During Semester 1 our Year 10 students had the exciting opportunity to undertake a week of both work experience and transition week activities as they move into Year 11 and 12 at MacKillop.
While on work placement, students learnt from industry professionals at workplaces including Ninja Stadium, CSIRO, Dean Winter MP’s Office, SDR Plumbing, Helicopter Resources, Hobart City Council and more. Take a look at the fun they got up to!
These placements allowed students to learn about specific occupations, explore career pathways, and acquire practical skills in different work environments. The program aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, helping students make informed decisions about their future careers.
Some of the notable things students enjoyed included:
“Learning the workings of politics” – Jack Burley, Tasmanian Parliament
“Designing a house of my own” – Tayla Semelbauer, Pinnacle Drafting & Design
“Extending my knowledge of planes and being in the environment I want to work in” – Zachary Wilson, Par Avion
“Getting to learn about different types of engineering” – Lillian Latham, Hydro Tasmania
To complement their work experience, students participated in various sessions as part of Careers and Transition Week. These sessions began with an exploration of how to navigate career pathway options and also delved into what it means to be an ‘active’ member of the community. A highlight of the week was a Spirituality Retreat Day at Blundstone Arena, facilitated by Sam Clear, known for his global walk promoting unity among Christians.
Students had the opportunity to learn how to dress for an interview with the Dress For Success team, the best resume writing strategies to secure that important job interview and create a vision board to imagine their dream career. Students even enjoyed a BBQ cooked by our Cookery Cert II class.
These two weeks are a vital part of the Year 10 Creating Futures Program as it introduces students to the world of work and helps them as the prepare for their senior secondary studies for Year 11 and 12 at MacKillop.
We are excited to now work with our Year 10 students on their course selections for Year 11 and 12, and guide them through their final years of schooling.
